Diabetes mellitus, also known as sugar diabetes, is a common disease in dogs. It has the highest incidences in Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Miniature Schnauzers, Keeshonden and Poodles but all breeds of dog can be affected.  Females are more likely to contract it outnumbering males by three to one and the average age of onset is 6 to 9 years old. Diabetes occurs as a result of inadequate production of insulin into the pancreas. This can be a genetic predisposition but it can also occur in some cases of pancreatitis.

Insulin allows glucose to pass into the cells where it is metabolised to produce energy.  Due to a sugar build up in the bloodstream, dogs with diabetes can suffer from an increased thirst or from urination. Initially dogs who have diabetes have an increase in appetite and a desire to consume more food but with the effects of malnourishment, the appetite soon drops.

Dog owners are advised to also look out for any lethargic behaviour as this can be a common symptom of diabetes.  If left untreated, it can lead to life threatening complications. Once your dog has been diagnosed with having diabetes, cat owners are recommended to ensure that their cat sticks to a healthy diet.

In the most part, canned foods are high in protein but low in carbohydrates whilst most dried foods are high in starch which makes them high in carbs too.  Your vet can aid you in creating a diet specific to your dog’s requirements. At Vet Medic, we stock a vast range of cat diabetic aids including test strips, syringes and control kits which contain everything required to help ensure that your dog is at his or her healthiest.
