Cestem XL covers all intestinal roundworms and tapeworms and is suitable for dogs between 18-35kg.

Cestem Flavour XL is the Cestem product for larger dogs of between 18 and 35kg bodyweight. Cestem XL flavoured tablets are a divisible tablet which contains febantel, pyrantel and praziquantel and is used to treat gastrointestinal worms found in UK dogs, including tapeworms and roundworms in dogs and puppies.

The three active ingredients in Cestem XL are highly effective against all important roundworm and tapeworm species. There is thought to be around twelve different intestinal worms which can infect dogs. Much like Drontal, the liver flavoured tablet is taken orally with or without food to kill off all worms.

When it comes to treating your dog, it is normally advised that an adult dog should be treated four times a year. Dogs that experience repeated flea problems may require more frequent treatment. Pet owners who treat their pets for worms regularly ensure the well-being of their pet whilst reducing environmental contamination and putting public health into consideration.

Owners should treat their dogs before any symptoms are visible. It is often the case that by the time any symptoms are visible, your dog is already suffering. Your dog should be treated at least every three months to stop the spread of infestation and all pets should be treated at the same time. The liver flavouring makes feeding it to a dog more manageable but should they struggle, conceal the tablet in your dog’s food.

General
How does my dog get worms?

There are 4 common ways your dog can pick up intestinal worms:
1. By swallowing infected fleas while grooming
2. By ingesting worm eggs from a contaminated environment (toys, grass, soil, etc.)
3. By eating or scavenging carcasses of other infected animals (mice, rabbits, birds, etc.)
4. From the mother to her puppies, either across the placenta before they are born, or via her milk when nursing

How do I know if I need to worm my dog?

You shouldn’t wait until you start seeing signs of worms as infections have to be quite severe before signs let you know there is a problem. Signs of worms can include weight loss, bloated tummy, diarrhoea, vomiting and scooting bottom along the ground but these are not specific to worm infections. Worm eggs are microscopic, but you might see worms (looking like spaghetti) or worm segments (looking like grains of rice) in your dog's stool or around their bottom.

Can people catch worms from dogs?

Yes. People can get infected by some worm eggs present on their dog's fur or in the environment, which can cause serious diseases. Roundworm larvae can travel through the body and cause blindness in severe cases, especially in children. That is why it’s important to deworm your dog regularly, even if you can’t see any worms or your dog looks healthy. Regular deworming of your dog can help reduce the chance of this happening and help you protect your whole family.

Is my dog more at risk from worms at certain times of the year?

No. Your dog can pick up worms at any time throughout the year. Worm eggs can survive in the environment for several years and infect your dog anywhere they explore.

How often should I deworm my dog?

It’s important that you don’t wait to see signs of worms or ill health before you worm your dog, and regular worming is part of responsible dog ownership to protect your pet, yourself and others. But how often you should worm will depend on a number of different factors.
Experts recommend treating dogs for intestinal worms at least four times a year. However, more frequent treatment may be required in certain cases, for example, if you have children, if there are pregnant women, elderly or immunosuppressed individuals in the home or if your dog has had fleas.
Always follow the advice of your pet healthcare professional who can recommend the adequate frequency for your dog’s circumstances.
